Caught in the misery of my seemingly annual sinus infection, I haven’t felt much like writing the last week, so I’m just going to drop here a newly discovered version of a tune that I wrote about a few months ago: “Last Kind Words Blues” by Geeshie Wiley.
As I wrote in April, little is known about Wiley and her life. We do know that she recorded “Last Kind Words” and a few other tracks for Paramount Records of Grafton, Wisconsin, in March or April of 1930. Very few copies of her recordings survive.
In the last dozen years or so, several good covers of the tune have been released. I shared a few of those in the spring, and just recently, digging around at YouTube, I came across another, this time by Belgian percussionist Chris Joris. It was included on his 2016 album Home and Old Stories. Providing the vocals on “Last Kind Words” his daughter, Naima Joris.
