Trawling Through The Thrift Stores with Joseph J Finn

Happy Thursday, everyone!  Baseball playoffs are on (go Phillies), basketball is starting soon, the NHL starts this weekend (honestly not knowing what I'm going to do at this point, because there are serious moral qualms with being a Chicago NHL fan right now) and the White Sox...sigh.  Imagine being that heavy of a playoffs favorite and missing it because of a terrible manager who couldn't compensate for a few injuries and maybe not putting Leury Garcia in the lineup every night.  But enough of my sports griping, let's see what I've found recently!

Thomas Vinterberg is a Danish director that I really feel I should have seen more of his work, but the one time I've watched this movie I shut it off after 15 minutes.  Not, by any means, because, it was bad; but because I saw the witch hunt coming and at the time I was not right for seeing Mads as a kindergarten teacher who is accused of abuse.  Vinterberg won the International Oscar last year for Another Round, also with Mads, so I do plan to give this another try because damn...Mads is really one of the best actors with no Oscar nomination. (And amazingly, no Emmy nomination for Hannibal.)

The Hunt is streaming on..jaysus, Prime, Kanopy, Hoopla, Tubi and Pluto with ads.

I have a weird fascination with documentaries that are potentially absolutely bullshit.  Exit Through The Gift Shop, Farenheit 9/11 and this, about 6 brothers who were supposedly kept together in a small NYC apartment with no connection to the outside world except for their father, who had the only key.  And then one of the brothers starts somehow exploring the outside, which they only know from movies.

I'm sorry, my reaction for seeing the movie this first time was that this was far too neat.  You found these caged children and decided to make a movie about them?  There are a lot of questions of documentary ethics in this and a revisit might make them even worse.

The Wolfpack is streaming on Criterion Channel, Hoopla and Kanopy.

This is a purely, "Eh, I found it for a buck" buy.  Judd Apatow is a decent director and I'm curious what he can do with the home of all the white cops and firefighters in New York.

The King of Staten Island is streaming on FreeeeeeeeeeVeeee (previously IMDbTV) and available at the usual places.

No snark here.  Finally, four movies in, we get a good A Star Is Born movie.  I loved this, it deserved all the award acclaim it got (I was one of those people who thought Andrew Dice Clay was great in it!) and it's one of those movies I seriously think will be remembered better as time passes.  Gaga is just plain great in it and her acting chemistry with Bradley Cooper, who shows a real eye here with DP Matthew Libatique (best known for his excellent work with Darren Aronofsky).  It's a beautiful, harrowing film at times.

A Star Is Born is not currently streaming anywhere but is available for rent and purchase at all the usual places.
