Happy Thursday everyone! It's nice weather here in Richmond but we could use some more rain and it looks like we're getting a little more heat before the fall properly gets on. So let's see what I found recently.

Have I ever watched an episode of True Blood? Heck no. Do I keep grabbing seasons when I see them for $3? Also yes. Partially because hell, like most HBO DVD releases the sets look really cool. And hell, I want to see it eventually for Anna Camp apparently playing an Evangelist who has a hidden agenda when it comes to vampires, which is something I'm curious about. Camp is one of those actors who I think can be very, very good at hiding a certain amount of devious evilness behind that sunny smile.
True Blood is all available on HBOMax.

I still believe that Hell Or High Water was slept on when it came out and for some reason, I didn't own it until this week. It's ostensibly about Chris Pine and Ben Foster as brothers who are robbing banks to save their family farm but becomes about the slow terrible recovery from the 2008 financial crisis, about family dramas, about a racist cop played wonderfully by Jeff Bridges and about just this whole area of Texas, portrayed perfectly by Taylor Sheridan (who also created Yellowstone and wrote Sicario) and his cohorts. It's a perfect-feeling depiction of a place and even though it did have several Oscar nominations, it somehow never feels like enough.
Also, it's worth noting that Dale Dickey shows up five seconds into this movie, lighting up a cigarette for the 20 steps from her truck to a bank and I maintain there is no bad movie with Dale Dickey.
Hell Or High Water is currently on Netflix and I really cannot recommend it enough.

Hey, it's Spooky Season now! Do you like horror? Do you like Robin Williams? Do you want to see his best performance outside Good Will Hunting? Why yes, yes you do. Because this amazing performance by Williams came at a time when he was trying new, scarier things for him as a performer (seriously, check out Insomnia some time). I almost want to tell you to go into this blind but hell, here's the trailer.
One Hour Photo is for rent or sale on all the usual places.

My recommendation for the week is one that's only on the Criterion Channel; Mississippi Masala is the first big release for Mira Nair and it's such a lovely movie with a younger Denzel Washington and Sarita Choudhury. (And for fans of her Monsoon Wedding, it also has the great Naseeruddin Shah.). It's charming and lovely and also has a lot to say about exile and prejudice.
